Recreation Ground Saturday morning 10am
Year round except summer holidays plus the occasional Bank Holiday mixed game.
We are a group of mostly women (men are very welcome to play on the team but usually prefer to keep out of the way!) who gather on the Willingham Recreation Ground on a Saturday morning for a very casual game of hockey. Most of us, but not all played hockey a long time ago and our knowledge of the rules is probably very out of date! For insurance purposes we do not let under 18s play in the team – we do not want to damage them!
We are a very friendly bunch of people, welcoming to all comers no matter what your skill level. However, if you are too good you may want to find a less bumpy pitch to play on. We meet in the car park of the Ploughman Hall at 10am and mark out the pitch with cones (kept in the new Pavilion) and have been known to play in high winds, fog, snow and certainly rain but we often catch the best part of the weekend sunshine.
We communicate by email and indicate if we can play the next Saturday or not some time the week before, in case there are so few of us that it is not worth turning up. People do come from Willingham, Cambridge, Histon, Somersham and even sometimes from Scotland to play. Players are divided into two roughly equal teams and we spend the next hour or so trying to thrash a small orange ball through the clover humps into the spot between the sticks at the other end with as little damage as possible.
It really is great fun and a very invigorating way to start your weekend or end a frustrating week! Do think about coming to join in, whatever your experience of hockey in the past, we have some spare sticks but you do need old trainers or football type boots and shin pads (and a good sense of humour). We also organise occasional meals out or trips to the pub when the mood takes us and are very happy for new company.
